The Case for the Unstuffed Planner

Plannerds love their stuffed planners. The internet is filled with images of thick planners, carrying all the information that can be fit within the rings. The images are glorious.

Images of tight leather pants are often just as beautiful. Still, you won't find me wearing those pants! They would not fit.

Instead, I am a champion of the unstuffed planner.

(I heard that gasp!)

A planner should carry all of the information that I need when on the go and no more. Why would I carry extra weight?

If there is more information that needs to be available at home or at work, that's a license to use a second or third binder! Or add in some e-planning.

But for the basics, keeping a planner unstuffed means that it has a nice feel in the hand. It's light in my bag and very mobile.

Here's a picture of my Franklin Covey Flourish next to my hand, so that you can see the size of the planner and how convenient it is for bringing with me wherever I travel.

(Sorry, boys and open-minded girls, I'm taken! I just forgot to wear my wedding ring.)

And the planner rings, at about 1 inch, mean that the stuffed planner is only about two fingers wide.

Go watch my You Tube video, Put Your Planner on a Diet, to find out how to unstuff your planner.

(I think that I remembered to retouch my manicure in that video, so your eyes won't have to suffer the same fate that you just endured.)

Etcetera.

  1. No matter which binder I use, all the zip pouches, folders, and pockets seem to "magically" move with me. If not for them, all their contents would be floating around my purse. My pagelifters are getting a workout. Have some serious rethinking to do.

  2. Great idea to scale back while still staying organized!

  3. I'm a two or three planner girl. I have one small one to carry with me, a big 3-ring; overstuffed one for everyday living at home, and a pretty/fun one for notes, cards, pictures, clippings ... (smash type) I LOVE them all! Great post. I'm heading over to watch the video now. :-)

  4. I would live for my planners to look as organized as all those Pinterest Pins! Thanks for sharing what a "real" planner should look like: as full as life as, well, life!

  5. Another great post:)) Stuffed planners make me jittery, like something's undone or I've missed something.

  6. Unstuffed planners are the best. Don't get me wrong, I love seeing images of them filled to capacity, but my purse isn't that big, ha! I technically could empty out much more from my planner even, but it's small enough that it fits perfectly, so it stays how it is. :)

  8. I have to admit I love the look of a stuffed planner - much like a scrapbook for me but, I keep mine more manageable by using a couple instead of just one. I was getting the personal mixed up with the blog so had to divide them. It does work much better for me now. Cathy

  9. Unstuffing a planner is a true art. I'm still working on it. Unlike many I really don't like the look of a fat planner any more than I like the look of my fat...well you get the idea. It gives me a panicky feeling.

  10. I liked both looks. Stuffed looks really cool I think, but unstuffed is the way I go just because of weight and practicality. So what I do is when I want a stuffed look, I move my inserts into a compact size filofax :D. lol
